If you’ve recently been made redundant and haven’t looked for a job in a while, one thing to know… The market feels very different to last time.
I’m speaking to more finance candidates at the moment who haven’t been on the market for 5, 10, even 15 years.

The biggest mistake I’m seeing? Panic.

A few things that will help

Do

  • Speak to 2-3 good recruiters, not 10
  • Be clear on what you actually want before applying
  • Take time to tailor your CV properly
  • Ask where your CV is being sent and who to

Don’t

  • Apply for everything you see in the first week
  • Let multiple agencies send your CV to the same company
  • Assume more applications = quicker results
  • Rush into a role just because it’s the first offer

The best candidates right now aren’t the fastest. They’re the ones who are clear, selective and properly prepared.

One more thing… If confidentiality matters, be careful what you share. You don’t need to tell recruiters where you’ve already got interviews, they don’t need that information and it can cause problems. A good recruiter will understand that. Redundancy is a shock and can be a difficult stressful time. But a rushed job search often creates a second problem.
